Meet Rutger Engels, the new Rector

Professor Rutger Engels has been appointed Rector by the Supervisory Board. On June 15, he will succeed Professor Huibert Pols, who will step down due to retirement. 

Engels (1968) has been CEO at Trimbos-institute since 2014. In 2016, he became a distinguished professor in Developmental Psychopathology at Utrecht University. 

Engels conducts internationally groundbreaking research into the development and prevention of substance abuse and issues of internalisation among children and adolescents. To honour his substantial impact on society, he received the Huibregtsen Award in 2011. In addition, he has received several other awards and grants over the course of his scientific career. Engels studied Psychology at the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD at the University of Maastricht.

Innovation in West Holland

Erasmus University is now a partner of InnovationQuarter, the regional development organisation for West Holland. This way, the university aims to contribute to innovation in our region. InnovationQuarter stimulates innovation and entrepreneurship in the province. Possibilities to add value to both education and research at Erasmus University are legion. Additional opportunities are generated by the so-called LDE (Leiden-Delft-Erasmus) alliance and the municipality of Rotterdam.

The Diversity Charter attracts new talent

Erasmus Universiteit recently signed the Diversity Charter. This way, the University reconfirms its intention to actively pursue issues of diversity and inclusion. Erasmus University doesn’t just hope to attract a diversity in talent, it also aims to make sure said talent flourishes. Moreover, the Charter, an initiative by the organisation ‘Diversiteit in bedrijf/Diversity at work’ hopes to stimulate greater diversity and inclusion in work environments. BP Netherlands and the Social-Economic Council (SER) have signed the Charter as well.

Our beautiful library

A resounding majority voted to have the University Library win the people’s choice award among the  Rotterdam Architecture Awards 2017. The renovation of the building started in October 2015, resulting in a lighter, airier and better-organised building with 900 seats to study, as well as a new entrance.

Uni turns 105: Science Meets City

This November 8th, 2018, the university celebrates its 105th birthday, counting from the establishment of the Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool in 1913. All throughout the academic year 2018-2019 Erasmus University will be celebrating with students, alumni, staff and the city of Rotterdam. ‘Science Meets City’ is the theme of the lustrum programme, to be kicked off at the opening of the Academic year on September 3rd in the Laurenskerk. Moving forward from that date, city and university will meet and reconnect in various surprising ways. Of course, many alumni have pledged make valuable contributions to the programme. Safety for refugees

Increased structural support for refugee students and endangered scientists internationally: Erasmus University recenty signed a cooperation agreement with the UAF Society for refugee students Vluchteling-Studenten that emphasizes the importance of the concept. The university hopes to offer these educated, talented people a safe environment. This way, they get to rebuild their lives while continuing their academic development and making a meaningful contribution to society. Eleven UAF students are currently enrolled at Erasmus University.
